AH 1110 - Art Historical Methods + Theories


Credits: 3

In the first of the sequence of three required courses in the history of art, students will be introduced to methodologies and critical theories specific to or used most by the discipline. Students will explore, discuss and knowledgeably write about a variety of different methodological and theoretical approaches to the interpretation of art and visual culture through critical examination of scholarly texts, both historical and contemporary. Critical theories discussed may include: Marxism, Feminism, Postcolonial Theory, Critical Race Theory, Queer Theory, Postmodernism, and others relevant to the discipline of art interpretation. Upon successful completion of this course, students will recognize and apply various art historical methodologies and theoretical applications through weekly readings, writing assignments, class discussions, and presentations.

Course Learning Outcomes:
  • Apply critical thinking skills through discussions and assignments that challenge assumptions, contextualize information, identify problems, conceptualize responses to topics within the history of the discipline of art history.
  • Analyze the thesis, methodology, supporting evidence, including theoretical frameworks, and conclusions of various scholarly articles.
  • Recognize and successfully apply different art historical methodologies and theoretical frameworks.
  • Compose clear and organized written assignments that include a thesis statement, supporting evidence, applied methodologies and conclusion.
  • Writing demonstrates clarity, organization, and correct grammar, syntax, spelling, and applied Chicago Manual of Style.
