HU 3333 - Symbolism + Esotericism in Art + Literature Credits: 3
This sophomore-level course explores symbolism in art and literature from Western esoteric mystery schools and Eastern philosophy and religion. The goal of this course is to establish a critical framework for understanding, analyzing, and using symbolism and esoteric thought in art and literature. Topics include a brief history of Western mystery schools, Eastern mystical philosophies and symbolism, and shamanism.
Course Learning Outcomes:
- Use symbolism, based in a defined historical context, in art and/or literature.
- Interpret symbolic representations in art and/or literature.
- Explain the historical context of esoteric thought and its influence on contemporary culture and art.
